Some textures receive adjustments, mostly faces, but the rest of it comes mostly from smoothing out edges. Realistically, Square Enix did very little to improve the visuals in Chrono Cross. The game should have simply given basic beginning instructions and either let you figure out the nuances on your own or given further instruction at a later time. The first ten hours don’t tax you too heavily on this aspect of the game, giving you plenty of time to explore how it all works without much risk. Apply fire enough times, and all fire abilities get stronger, which also leaves water abilities weaker. ![]() Each character utilizes an element, such as the standard RPG forays of fire, water, earth, etc, and these bring more to the battlefield than just abilities.īoth you and your enemies can adjust the field’s elemental affinity to strengthen certain elements. The other significant part of combat is managing elements. You can squeeze as many hits as you can in each turn with the stamina your character has available, with larger hits naturally requiring more stamina. The main concept is to build up your percentages with smaller attacks to make your larger attacks land more successfully. With each successful hit, the percentages for all of your subsequent hits increases. You have three levels of attacks, each one stronger than the other the stronger the attack, the lower the percentage of landing the hit. Melee consists of a risk-reward system based on percentages and levels of attacks. Though the remaster of these games may be flawed in presentation, “Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition” is still worth playing to experience two landmark RPG titles.Combat offers some unique mechanics that reflect the spectrum of good and bad. Though not a perfect remaster, it’s still a way to re-experience a landmark game and to experience a title that had previously never seen release outside Japan. Hopefully, some of the problems with resolution and framerate can be fixed in potential updates.Įven so, the fact that these games have been rereleased after all this time is a testament to their appeal and impact. Though the games themselves are still worth playing, the problems caused this article to be reworked into an editorial rather than a full-on review. Not just in the case of the Nintendo Switch port - the release of the title on Playstation 4 introduces a litany of glitches on top of exacerbating issues from the original game. An analysis of this version by Digital Foundry on their YouTube channel has found that, in many respects, the game runs with more performance issues than the original Playstation version. Earlier this year, the title was given an HD remaster on modern systems known as “Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition.” Though not without its flaws, it’s still a worthwhile way to revisit landmark games. Upon its release in the year 2000, the original Playstation title “Chrono Cross” proved to be a unique followup to the beloved 1995 role-playing game “Chrono Trigger,” later becoming a cult classic in its own right.
